As requested, here is the story of my name: Back when I was first living in Japan as an exchange student, I was put into a lot of traditional Japanese activities to broaden my horizon.
One of these activities was a festival in which a bunch of people dress up as samurai and the like and parade around the city a flash their swords and what-not. The mayor was the leader, he had bodyguards, and I was one of his samurai army. It was very fun walking around in samurai armor; it was even better because I was the first foreigner to do it. Anyway, when we were parading around, people filled the streets to look and take pictures of us. One woman, obviously noticing I was a foreigner, wanted to take my picture, so she got my attention by saying, 'Sumimasen! I laughed at the ridiculousness of the phrase (Gaijin is derogatory, and having -sama added to it is very odd), and realized that it would be a fun name to have. So yea, I didn't just make up the name.
